Suez Crisis 1956: Anglo-French-Israeli Invasion of Egypt and US Response
SUMMARY
The Suez Crisis of 1956 involved an invasion of Egypt by Israel, followed by the United Kingdom and France, with the primary aim of regaining control of the Suez Canal after Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal Company. This event, also known as the Tripartite Aggression in the Arab world and the Sinai War in Israel, is widely considered a pivotal moment marking the decline of British and French imperial influence. Declassified US and UK intelligence documents, such as those within the 'Foreign Relations of the United States' series and records from the National Archives, reveal the US position against its allies' actions, including a lack of prior notification from the British. The crisis escalated into a significant international confrontation, with the US opposing its allies and facing a potential confrontation with the Soviet Union, ultimately leading to the withdrawal of the invading forces due to US pressure.
STRONGEST CASE FOR
The Suez Crisis, when viewed through declassified intelligence, illustrates a concerted effort by the UK, France, and Israel to reassert control over a strategically vital waterway and to depose a perceived hostile leader. The pre-arranged nature of the invasion, as suggested by some historical interpretations, points to a calculated military and political maneuver. The substantial volume of declassified documents from both US and UK archives, including intelligence estimates and diplomatic communications, provides a rich basis for understanding the motivations and actions of the involved parties, demonstrating the declining influence of European powers and the rise of US global dominance.
STRONGEST CASE AGAINST
While declassified documents shed light on the diplomatic and intelligence aspects of the Suez Crisis, the precise extent of US foreknowledge or complicity in the initial stages remains a subject of historical debate. The UK and France's expectation of US support, as noted by sources like the National Security Archive, suggests a misunderstanding or miscalculation of US policy rather than explicit US involvement in the planning. Furthermore, the crisis's complexity, involving Arab-Israeli tensions, Cold War dynamics, and post-colonial aspirations, means that no single set of documents, however extensive, can fully capture all motivations and repercussions. The narrative of a pre-arranged invasion, while prevalent, requires careful examination against all available evidence.
